Disclaimer:
This book shares a similar idea in relation to character placement
and archetypes as the “Cult Classic” movie The Breakfast Club, but I am
here to set things straight on why this plotline is so tremendously different
than the famous movie.
Section One, What Theo Gustav has contributed.
As you might have suspected, in the original Breakfast Club
1990s film there was no one specific victim they all got Saturday detention
for. It was all separate acts of mischief, except for the “Basket Case” who
just wanted to be there because she had nothing else to do that Saturday.
Although, It Wasn’t Me gives a completely contrasted vibe in the Justice
Circle because of one character...Theo Gustav. In the novel every student
attending the restorative Justice Circle was there because of one incident. Due
to Theo’s paintings being ruined with horrid graffiti all people who were there
at the time Shipton School Staff arrived (or in Andre’s case, not there when
they arrived) were viewed as prime suspects. This involving one sole victim,
Theo Gustav. Unlike The Breakfast Club the book is actually written from
the victims perspective on the suspects. Theo shares his opinion with the
reader, portraying the incident as one thing when it is really not what he
originally thought it was. This is because, in The Breakfast Club you
can draw your own conclusion with the evidence provided in the film. In
contrast, in It Wasn’t Me Theo voices what he is sure to be what
actually happened. For instance, in the novel on page 258 the text states, “‘But
here the thing,’ I say. ‘I really think there’s a chance that we were getting
somewhere. And you know, these last cameras...it wasn’t bullying or vandalism
or anything, it was-’ ‘Teddy,’ he finishes.” This quote further ensures the
fact Theo first suspected someone wanted to purposely vandalize his work for
the third time. This makes him super uncomfortable that someone could just have
it out for them. Except, Teddy John (or Lil’ Bit as Mr. Saunders likes to call
him) actually too the cameras believing they were just trash due to the fact
they were pinhole cameras. Now Theo doesn’t view the fact his cameras were gone
as a threat or vandalism of his work, but as a sincere little kid who made a
mistake. Before this realization Theo was tearing himself apart, scared who
could hate him that much. Now, he is kind of reassured in a sense that the
bullies didn’t care as much to do it again. All in all, that is why Theo Gustav
proved such a vibrant asset to The Justice Club. Thus, proving
beyond quantificationally possible to measure the novel It Wasn’t
Me is clearly contrastic from The Breakfast Club. (Minus
the fact they called themselves The Justice Club at the end of
their letter.
