In the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton the main character Ponyboy
Curtis does not crumble to the ground after being jumped by a rival gang.
Unlike another gang member, Jonathan, he does not come out with bewildering
trauma and manages not to cry. Proving a huge surprise to Darry and all the
other greasers who thought he was going to die. For example, on page 8 the text
shows, “Soda just put his hand on my shoulder. ‘Easy, Ponyboy. They ain’t gonna
hurt you no more.’” This quote demonstrates Ponyboy needed minimal comfort and
only his biological brother, Sodapop. It can be greatly noticed, when Johnny
got beat up everyone was getting involved to help. Although despite those
efforts Ponyboy put on a stern look making them realize he was fine. Further
ensuring that Ponyboy shows ultimate resilience against being beat up. In
contrast to Johnny, Ponyboy loses none of his confidence to speak or voice his
opinions while talking. Henceforth, Ponyboy knows how to stand his ground,
proving resilience. A separate example is one shortly after the quote above on
page 9, “Soda doesn’t think I’m a kid.” This shows, Ponyboy’s resilience
catches on to Sodapop. This is because Sodapop believes that Ponyboy can hold
his own and some against their rival gang. Instilling this trust and belief is
very important for Ponyboy since he needs the gang to believe he can take care
of himself. Improving freedom away from Darry, Sodapop, and the other gang
members alike in their neighborhood. This shows, if Sodapop trusts Ponyboy
pretty soon everyone will start trusting him. Thus, spreading his moment of
resilience into greaser history. In conclusion, Ponyboy has shown he will never
bow down to the spoiled Socs giving them the benefit of being their victim.
Ponyboy will be resilient. Ponyboy will be strong!
